Walk With Me: Decolonizing & Expanding Our Approaches to Orchestral Performance
Tuesday, February 13 • 7:30p Eastern
We know many teachers want to engage with diverse cultures in their classrooms, but there’s often uncertainty around content knowledge, personal background, and cultural appropriation. The session will feature case studies from FASE Assistant Director Felipe Morales-Torres’ own attempts to center Black history and aesthetics with students in school and youth orchestra settings. We hope it will serve as a primer for our Black History Month series, helping participants to understand the extent to which European aesthetics dominate orchestral music and teaching, and offering starting points for shifting our approaches to be more informed, more valid, and more free.
Presenter: Felipe Morales-Torres
