From Mozart to Mánicos: Navigating Mariachi Education as a Cultural Visitor
Thursday, October 12 • 7:30p Eastern
We know many teachers want to engage with diverse cultures in their classrooms, but there’s often uncertainty around content knowledge, personal background, and cultural appropriation. Scott Glasser is a respected and accomplished Mariachi educator in Phoenix, Arizona who has managed to navigate the field with great cultural humility. He now leads the Mariachi program at Arizona State University and teaches a graduate course on Mariachi programs for VanderCook University. This session will highlight best practices for those teachers wanting to engage in Mariachi with their students, despite not being Mexican or Latin/Hispanic themselves.
Presenter: Scott Glasser
